Floor-standing Bipolar Loudspeaker
Floor-standing Bipolar Loudspeaker
Definitive Technology's BP8 is a revolutionary audiophile-engineered, designer-styled loudspeaker intended for musical reproduction and home theater systems of the highest quality. This full-range bipolar (front and rear) radiating system combines the lush spacious soundstaging, lifelike depth-of-field, razor-sharp resolution and pinpoint imaging of the finest dipolar panel loudspeakers with the extended bass response, high-efficiency, wide dynamic range and easy-to-position convenience of the best conventional box systems.
Audiophile Performance, Designer Styling, and Unmatched Value
The goal of the Definitive design team was to create state-of-the-art loudspeakers which offered unsurpassed sophisticated technology and lifelike musical and cinematic reproduction combined in sleek and stylish designs which could be easily and attractively placed in your home. Their success in achieving these goals is immediately apparent when you listen to your favorite music or movie through Definitive speakers. The elegant slender towers seem to disappear in a huge natural soundstage which extends in a three-dimensional arc beyond the speakers from left to right, and exhibits front to back depth which, at times, can be almost startling in its ability to recreate the illusion of live music or cinematic action being performed in your room (which will seem to be almost magically expanded in size).
Thousands of man-hours of critical listening and design processes utilizing the most advanced computer loudspeaker development programs available along with fundamental research at the NRC (the world's most advanced loudspeaker research facility) have combined to produce loudspeakers like no other in the world. The spectacular three-dimensional imaging, awesome deep bass response and silky smooth high definition linearity of the Definitive Technology BP6B are the result of a myriad of technological advancements and breakthroughs (including the latest state-of-the-art components and technology developed for Definitive's flagship BP7000 Series loudspeakers) which have been combined to create unmatched instruments for the reproduction of music or movies in your home. They truly recreate reality that totally suspends disbelief.
The Sonic Superiority of Definitive's Bipolar Loudspeakers
Many experts and in-the-know listeners agree that bipolar speakers are absolutely superior for both music and home theater. Each speaker incorporates two complete sets of drivers, one facing forward and the other facing to the rear. Thus Definitives speakers radiate the full
sonic spectrum both forward and rearward in an omni-directional pattern, exactly as sound is produced in real life.
The sonic benefits you hear are dramatic! This unique technology provides you with a lifelike balance of early-arrival sound information, which provides focus, clarity and location data, and properly delayed late-arrival information, which conveys the lush three-dimensional soundstage of a live music or cinematic performance. This combination creates a huge soundfield which is rich, warm, ultra clear and vibrantly alive. Bipolar technology assures a superb panorama of lifelike sound for every listener wherever they are in the room. Most importantly, however, Definitive's bipolar speakers make the walls of your room seem to disappear and, in effect, expand the size of your room into the sound space of the recoded event your system is reproducing. They will literally bring your music and movies to life in your home. One listen and you can never go back to conventional speakers again!
Movies and music are reproduced with unequaled purity, transparency and lifelike realism. These elegant, slender towers seem to disappear in a huge natural soundstage which extends in a three-dimensional arc beyond the speakers with front to back depth which can be almost magical in its ability to recreate the illusion of live music or cinematic action actually being performed in your room. This combination of high resolution, magnificent sound-staging awesome bass and explosive impact literally envelops you in what is absolutely the ultimate listening experience.
Monocoque, Non-Resonant, Low-Diffraction Cabinets
The cabinet of a loudspeaker plays a large part in its sonic performance. Diffraction, or the secondary radiation of sound caused by cabinet edges, grille frames and other protrusions, can color the sound of a loudspeaker. The design of the BP6B reduces diffraction to an absolute minimum by flush mounting drivers on extremely narrow baffles with radial edges, which are covered by a frameless grille "sock."
In addition, the resonant vibration of a loudspeaker's cabinet walls and baffles can also impart unwanted coloration. The Definitives' monocoque cabinets are constructed of high-density medite with 1" thick front and rear baffles, foam dampening pads and internal braces. This virtually eliminates resonant cabinet coloration which could otherwise interfere with the pure sound produced by our high definition drivers. The BP6B also includes an additional divider/brace panel separating the front and rear drivers.
The BP6B utilizes two high definition bass/midrange drivers for significant performance advantages in the areas of bass reproduction, lifelike midrange clarity and dynamic range. These sophisticated bass/midrange drivers incorporate deeply drawn mineral-filled polymer cones, combined with butyl rubber surrounds and dustcaps, high temperature vented voice coils and massive magnet structures. This combination of features assures high definition, superb transient response, high efficiency, high power handling and extended bass response. In addition, they are assembled utilizing an aerodynamically designed basket to minimize internal reflections off the back of the cone and preserve magnetic integrity under all conditions.
Moving Coil Pure Aluminum Dome Tweeters
The moving coil dome tweeters Definitive developed for the top-of-the-line BP7000 Series are used in the BP6B. They utilize a specially annealed pure aluminum 1-inch dome, suspended by a silk surround and acoustically loaded by a precisely configured phase plug/lens, engineered to assure perfectly controlled, absolutely linear movement. This results in velvety smooth extended response (beyond 30 kHz), greatly reduced distortion, improved transient response, wider dispersion and notably higher definition. Magnetic fluid damping is incorporated for ultra high power handling.
Phase-Coherent Linkwitz-Riley Crossover Networks
The crossover network of a loudspeaker is the real heart of the system, as it is responsible for perfectly blending together the sound of the various drivers into a musically seamless whole. The sophisticated Linkwitz-Riley design used in the BP6B equalizes the drivers for linear phase and frequency response. This preserves the phase coherence, transient response and dynamic integrity of the signal for absolutely lifelike music and home theater reproduction in your home.
Easily Positioned for Superior Sound Throughout Your Room for Every Listener
BP6Bs are engineered to be easy to position (just 4" to 24" out from the wall) in any listening room or home theater installation in order to achieve superb sonic reproduction throughout your room. In addition, a major benefit of the special driver topology is wide dispersion, which assures a superb panorama of lifelike sound for every listener in the room.

I have loved my BP6s for the several years I have had them but was blown away when I compared the sound from some of my favorite CDs when using the BP7002 SuperTowers at the store. I bought a pair of the BP7002's and am absolutely delighted at the wonderful improvement to both CDs and to my home theater. My wife (who usually frowns at my A/V purchases) absolutely loves them as well. Even some of my audiophile friends (who only buy speakers starting at $5,000 a pair) have conceded that these DF speakers rock. Great deal!
"The price was more than just alright, it was great."
Last year for Christmas I received a 6.1 receiver with an Energy Take 5.2 speaker package. Watching movies it faired OK, but as far as listening to music it was sub-par. I needed to do something about the front speakers to get clarity in music. I started with your typical Best Buy, Circuit City, etc., to find speakers. All of the speakers in my price range sounded better than mine, but by far not mind blowing in their clarity.
I went to a local high-end home theater store not thinking anything would fit my price range, but to my surprise I found the Definitive Technology BP6B Bipolar Towers. I couldn't believe how clear they were, and the price was more than just alright, it was great. They blew away the Infinity, Polk, etc., that I had been looking at.
Once I set them up at home they really shined. I have since added a C/L/R 2002 center channel and I am looking to upgrade my subwoofer and rear surround speakers. I will no doubt buy Definitive Technology. I am a customer for life.
"Awesome sound, well-built, very attractive cabinets, and an excellent price. What more could you want?"
I finally got my new CLR 2002 and BP2Xs, and I absolutely love them. I heard things last night while watching OPEN RANGE that I wasn't able to hear with the old Bose system, especially in the surrounds.
These three speakers sounded awesome in the store, but when I got them home and added them to my BP6s and two ProSub 80s, my wife had to pick my jaw up off of the floor. I couldn't believe it! All the loudspeakers in my system have the same size drivers and the Denon AVR-1804 just makes 'em purr.
I never thought I would have a home theater that sounds this good, not at the price. Friends and family have heard it over the last couple of weeks and think I've spent a fortune. Awesome sound, well-built, very attractive cabinets, and an excellent price. What more could you want?
I'm very proud to have a complete Definitive Technology speaker system. I wouldn't have any other brand. Thank you and keep up the good work. I'll upgrade again in a couple of years when I move. Hmmmmm... BP7001SC....
"Best speakers for the price."
these speakers are amazing depth is great I highly recommend. Best speakers for the price.
"Definitive is my drug"
I have reviewed several of my systems on this site, and just recently purchased a pair of these BP6's for my bedroom, which also has a pro monitor set-up, I am addicted! Seriously, Definitive is my drug, I would be heartbroken without them. I just finished watching Master and Commander, BP6's as my mains, super cube 3 sub, pro monitor 1000 surrounds, pro cinema 2000 center. What a great film to showcase these terrific speakers. At the end of the film, the credits roll to about 10 minutes of some beautiful and varied scores, all conveyed so accurately, powerfully, and with such warmth, that only my wife coming in to tell me it was time to go, could have taken me away. She'll never understand my pain!
"I was dubious about the bi-polar thing, but now I'm a believer."
Feb. 2010. Way back in 1997, I bought a ProCinema 100 system, with the ProMonitor 100s, ProCenter 100, and ProSub 100 ("Thundering Betty"), and had some cheepies for the surrounds. Always LOVED it. As a 40th birthday present to myself, decided to upgrade the fronts and move the 100s to the surrounds. Thought briefly about the BP7006, but living in a townhouse with nice neighbors, I can't go too overboard. Went with the BP6B. I can't believe how much fuller and richer the sound is, and it was already excellent. They really are stunning. I was dubious about the bi-polar thing, but now I'm a believer. Also purchased a promonitor 2000, so I have perfectly matched tweeters and mids across the front. The ProSub now just quitely hums along at the 40 and below frequencies and really provides a rich and subtle foundation for the rest of the system. From a durability and longevity point of view, I've had my DefTechs for 13 years now. Never a problem, and I just love them. The upgrade was money very well spent. DefTech is known for delivering well priced speakers at each price point. These speakers (really the entry point in the bi-polar setup) were not only a great price, but are just amazing speakers, and if history is a guide will last a long, long time. I would absolutely make the same decision again. Congrats, DefTech... I am a huge fan and a very satisfied customer.
"13 years later they are still chugging along with the same clarity as day 1"
In 1997 I purchased a used Carver TFM 15CB along with a set of speakers that did not do it justice. I friend convinced me to listen to the DT bi-polar series. After listening to every speaker in the series, I was shocked that the BP6, with their very modestly sized drivers had the most clarity while pushing high volumes with little problem. 13 years later they are still chugging along with the same clarity as day 1. They have survived multiple moves and supplied high volume output from classical to death metal to video game explosions. Now that the Carver will be retired, I plan on incorporating them into a 7.1 system as LR fronts (obviously with a new Definitive kit).
The only thing I might throw in as a possible negative is the listed frequency response down to 25hz is a bit optimistic. If you plan on listening to hip-hop or anything with a lot of sustained lows, you should consider a sub-woofer with crossover. Otherwise BP6's are the easy choice for the audiophile on a budget.
"Que sonido, que poder (What sound, what power)"
Que sonido, que poder, definitivamente la inversion en mi home theater sistem es lo mejor, solo por la television si no todo fuera definitive, vale la pena gastar un poco por tan buena tecnologia.
