Definitive Technology's BP8 is a revolutionary audiophile-engineered, designer-styled loudspeaker intended for musical reproduction and home theater systems of the highest quality. This full-range bipolar (front and rear) radiating system combines the lush spacious soundstaging, lifelike depth-of-field, razor-sharp resolution and pinpoint imaging of the finest dipolar panel loudspeakers with the extended bass response, high-efficiency, wide dynamic range and easy-to-position convenience of the best conventional box systems.
Audiophile Performance, Designer Styling, and Unmatched Value
The goal of the Definitive design team was to create state-of-the-art loudspeakers which offered unsurpassed sophisticated technology and lifelike musical and cinematic reproduction combined in sleek and stylish designs which could be easily and attractively placed in your home. Their success in achieving these goals is immediately apparent when you listen to your favorite music or movie through Definitive speakers. The elegant slender towers seem to disappear in a huge natural soundstage which extends in a three-dimensional arc beyond the speakers from left to right, and exhibits front to back depth which, at times, can be almost startling in its ability to recreate the illusion of live music or cinematic action being performed in your room (which will seem to be almost magically expanded in size).
Thousands of man-hours of critical listening and design processes utilizing the most advanced computer loudspeaker development programs available along with fundamental research at the NRC (the world's most advanced loudspeaker research facility) have combined to produce loudspeakers like no other in the world. The spectacular three-dimensional imaging, awesome deep bass response and silky smooth high definition linearity of the Definitive Technology BP8B are the result of a myriad of technological advancements and breakthroughs (including the latest state-of-the-art components and technology developed for Definitive's flagship BP7000 Series loudspeakers) which have been combined to create unmatched instruments for the reproduction of music or movies in your home. They truly recreate reality that totally suspends disbelief.
The Sonic Superiority of Definitive's Bipolar Loudspeakers
Many experts and in-the-know listeners agree that bipolar speakers are absolutely superior for both music and home theater. Each speaker

Definitive's BiPolar technology radiates sound from the front and the back of the speaker for more life-like sound and spacious imaging for every listener in the room. |
incorporates two complete sets of drivers, one facing forward and the other facing to the rear. Thus Definitives speakers radiate the full sonic spectrum both forward and rearward in an omni-directional pattern, exactly as sound is produced in real life.
The sonic benefits you hear are dramatic! This unique technology provides you with a lifelike balance of early-arrival sound information, which provides focus, clarity and location data, and properly delayed late-arrival information, which conveys the lush three-dimensional soundstage of a live music or cinematic performance. This combination creates a huge soundfield which is rich, warm, ultra clear and vibrantly alive. Bipolar technology assures a superb panorama of lifelike sound for every listener wherever they are in the room. Most importantly, however, Definitive's bipolar speakers make the walls of your room seem to disappear and, in effect, expand the size of your room into the sound space of the recoded event your system is reproducing. They will literally bring your music and movies to life in your home. One listen and you can never go back to conventional speakers again!
Movies and music are reproduced with unequaled purity, transparency and lifelike realism. These elegant, slender towers seem to disappear in a huge natural soundstage which extends in a three-dimensional arc beyond the speakers with front to back depth which can be almost magical in its ability to recreate the illusion of live music or cinematic action actually being performed in your room. This combination of high resolution, magnificent sound-staging awesome bass and explosive impact literally envelops you in what is absolutely the ultimate listening experience.
Monocoque, Non-Resonant, Low-Diffraction Cabinets
The cabinet of a loudspeaker plays a large part in its sonic performance. Diffraction, or the secondary radiation of sound caused by cabinet edges, grille frames and other protrusions, can color the sound of a loudspeaker. The design of the BP8B reduces diffraction to an absolute minimum by flush mounting drivers on extremely narrow baffles with radial edges, which are covered by a frameless grille "sock."
In addition, the resonant vibration of a loudspeaker's cabinet walls and baffles can also impart unwanted coloration. The Definitives' monocoque cabinets are constructed of high-density medite with 1" thick front and rear baffles, foam dampening pads and internal braces. This virtually eliminates resonant cabinet coloration which could otherwise interfere with the pure sound produced by our high definition drivers. The BP8B also includes an additional divider/brace panel separating the front and rear drivers.
Multiple High-Definition Cast-Magnesium Basket Drivers
The BP8B utilizes two high definition cast basket bass/midrange drivers (the same as used in Definitive's flagship BP7000 Series) for significant performance advantages in the areas of bass reproduction, lifelike midrange clarity and dynamic range. These sophisticated bass/midrange drivers incorporate deeply drawn mineral-filled polymer cones, combined with butyl rubber surrounds and dustcaps, high temperature vented voice coils and massive magnet structures. This combination of features assures high definition, superb transient response, high efficiency, high power handling and extended bass response. In addition, they are assembled utilizing an aerodynamically designed, magnetically inert, cast-magnesium basket to minimize internal reflections off the back of the cone and preserve structural and magnetic integrity under all conditions.
Moving Coil Pure Aluminum Dome Tweeters
The moving coil dome tweeters Definitive developed for the top-of-the-line BP7000 Series are used in the BP8B. They utilize a specially annealed pure aluminum 1-inch dome, suspended by a silk surround and acoustically loaded by a precisely configured phase plug/lens, engineered to assure perfectly controlled, absolutely linear movement. This results in velvety smooth extended response (beyond 30 kHz), greatly reduced distortion, improved transient response, wider dispersion and notably higher definition. Magnetic fluid damping is incorporated for ultra high power handling.
Phase-Coherent Linkwitz-Riley Crossover Networks
The crossover network of a loudspeaker is the real heart of the system, as it is responsible for perfectly blending together the sound of the various drivers into a musically seamless whole. The sophisticated Linkwitz-Riley design used in the BP8B equalizes the drivers for linear phase and frequency response. This preserves the phase coherence, transient response and dynamic integrity of the signal for absolutely lifelike music and home theater reproduction in your home.
Easily Positioned for Superior Sound Throughout Your Room for Every Listener
BP8Bs are engineered to be easy to position (just 4" to 24" out from the wall) in any listening room or home theater installation in order to achieve superb sonic reproduction throughout your room. In addition, a major benefit of the special driver topology is wide dispersion, which assures a superb panorama of lifelike sound for every listener in the room.

I've had my bp8b speakers for almost a year. Are you kidding! These are awesome! My friends heard them and bought the same thing. I should be getting commission! I am so much more than happy! I'm ecstatic!!!

I should have reviewed these speakers a long time ago. Simply put, I demo'd the BP8's against speakers costing 3 times as much. Not only did they exceed in accuracy, and detail, but they outclassed them in one very important respect-openess. Where every other performer sounded like they were coming out of a box, when you closed your eyes, and listened, the sound coming from the Definitives sounded like it was just plain in the room. It caught my attention, and prompted me to compare all others to the BP8's. And fortunately for Definitive, nothing came close, and I would go home with what would become my go to brand. There is a Definitive system in nearly every room of my apartment, and anyone who hears them quickly becomes interested. For anyone who wants to get utterly lost in the music, or a great movie, look no further. And make sure to mate them with a quality receiver, it would be unfair to judge them otherwise. And for the record, customer service is top shelf, you will be hard pressed to find a better group of people. Thank you Definitive for all the great years, I am indebted.

This is more of a story than a review. I have a few other reviews on this site about much more expensive and elaborate Def Tech speakers. However, these little gems is where the story started on my quest for the perfect sound and the acquistion of several Deft Tech speakers. As I said in one of my previous reviews, I bought my initial set of Def Techs ( BP7002 - front mains, CL2300 - center, BP10B - surrounds, Supercube Reference - Subwoofer) without hearing a note played on these speakers. My decision was based on those old advertisements with the see through pictures of the speakers showing all the engineering of the bi-polar technology. I always beleived I could get better sound than what I had with my existing speakers and this was the driving force to get these speakers. So when I got my set I was very happy that the speakers did not dissapoint.
At the time, I had a set of Infinity bookshelf speakers in my bedroom and was intially happy with them. However I grew dissatisfied with their performance with the progression of time. I was also thinking of upgrading to the 7.1 system since I now had an Amplifier that could support that configuration and got an extra BP10B to put as the rear center, only because I wanted the rear to be higher that the surrounds which were BP8B's at the time. I was not very impressed with the way the 7.1 sounded and reverted back to my 5.1 system. Now, what to do with that extra speaker? I tried the BP8B in the bedroom instead of the Infinity bookshelves and was instantly floored by the improvements in sound at every level you could imagine. So I started experimenting, and put the BP10B in the bedroom next, wow improved sound again. This started a quest for perfection. Every upgrade in Def Tech speaker was giving me better sound, so I kept upgrading. Therefore, I have owned BP30's (discotinued but got a pristine set pre-owned), Mythos one's, Mythos ST's (Not STS's), Mythos 5's and, this is the BIG and, BP7000sc's. I owned all of these different speakers during my experimentation. Now I have only BP7000SC's as my main speakers. I have them in 4 rooms! So, count, 4 x 2 = 8!! Yes, I actually have 9 of these speakers! I got so addicted that when I see them being sold at a good price, I can't help myself. I am very happy with these speakers and am never dissapointed. There are days when they bring out a new sound on either an old cd or new one which I never heard before.I mean this in a good way! So the little BP8B's has lead me on a journey that ended up at the pinnacle of Def Tech's product and I am very pleased. I have over this time divested myself of the Bp7002's, BP30's and all the Mythos speakers because I really love the 7000SC's and the Bi-polar sound over evrything else. But I never let go of the 8B's. There you have it.
