The Thinner the TV, the Worse the Sound
Ultra-shallow TVs are the hottest category in TVs today. People love their space-saving qualities and elegant design. But it comes at a high cost—significantly poorer sound quality. The speakers in these ultra-thin TVs are small and poorly placed (usually on the bottom or on the back of the set) not even facing the listener. The result is sound that is good enough for news broadcasts but far from what is acceptable for sports, movies and action/adventure programming. Imagine the letdown when you return home after seeing Avatar or similar audio/visual blockbuster in a Dolby Digital cinema and turn on your TV to watch a DVD with cheap 2-inch speakers providing the sound!
In order to equal the total high impact sight and sound experience that high definition digital sources are capable of delivering, a great TV deserves a great component audio system. And the only component loudspeakers that can deliver clarity, dynamic impact and life-like realism while matching the slim styling of new generation TVs are the XTR series models.
Revolutionary XTDD Technology Drivers
The secret to the XTR-50's extraordinary performance is Definitive's patent-pending XTDD technology anodized Aluminum dome driver. Using state-of-the-art computer modeling and decades of speaker design experience, Definitive engineers eliminated every iota of wasted space, optimized every part and maximized the moving surface area of a dynamic driver to shrink it down to an impossibly compact dimension without giving up ultra high performance audio fidelity! The XTDD driver has the kind of dynamic punch, wide frequency range and broad dispersion that flat vibrating membrane panel-type speakers simply cannot match.
To extend and deepen the bass response of such an impossibly thin speaker the XTDD drivers are pressure coupled to four anodized Aluminum dome bass radiators. The center-mounted tweeter is the same hyper-definition Pure Aluminum Dome Tweeter found in Definitive's award-winning state-of-the-art Mythos ST SuperTower®. The total effect is the kind of clarity, dynamic range and extended response that one would expect from a premium-priced normally-sized speaker. Your friends and family will be agog with amazement when they hear the huge rich sound that comes out of the wafer-thin XTRs.
Aircraft-Grade Aluminum Enclosure Saves Space and Improves Performance
Another secret to the XTR-50's astounding thin profile and superior performance is its aluminum cabinet. By specially shaping the enclosure and incorporating stiffing ribs and channels, we've made the space-efficient aluminum extrusion ultra-rigid and resonance-free. The magnets of the XTDD drivers protrude through the rear wall of the enclosure to further minimize depth. A thermally conductive gasket seals the enclosure/magnet interface and transfers heat from the driver's rare-earth magnet to the enclosure, making the whole enclosure a giant heat dissipater! And everyone knows that a cool driver is a happy, reliable driver.
Is It Thin Enough?
With TV manufacturers advertising TVs with 1.25 inch and even less than 1-inch depth one might wonder if the XTR-50 is shallow enough to look good next to these impossibly thin TVs. The answer is a resounding YES. First, the advertised depth of a TV is the depth without the hardware necessary to mount the TV on a wall. For example the leading brand of LED TVs is advertised as being 1.2 inches deep. But the wall mount hardware brings the installed depth to 1.75-inches, .25-inches deeper than the XTR-50 installed on-wall. Should TVs get even thinner the XTR-50's design is up to the challenge. The XTR-50 is bow shaped with knife-edge sides. The sides are less than an inch from the wall so even if TVs get shallower; the XTR-50 will be up to the task.
Ultimate Placement Versatility
The XTR-50 comes supplied with everything you need to use place it wherever you want to use it. The XTR-50 can be mounted directly to the wall using the key-hole slots on the back of the enclosure and well-anchored screws. If you choose, the speaker can be wall mounted using the supplied mounting bracket that allows either vertical or horizontal orientation with a total installed on-wall depth of only 40mm. Two adjustable support feet are supplied in cases where you place the XTR-50 on a shelf as a center channel speaker (horizontal orientation). For vertical shelf or table top placement the XTR-50 comes with a beautiful tempered smoked glass base. Whether you're mounting it on wall or on shelf, as Left and Right, Center or Surround channel speakers the Mythos XTR®-50 is ready to look terrific and sound astounding.

"I was blown away by the sound "
I purchased three of these XTR-50 speakers last year around Christmas time as a gift to our family for our home theatre to go with our 60" Panasonic Plasma that I had bought on black Friday. I had planned on purchasing these for my front 3 speakers - Left / Center & Right. They look amazing on the wall next to my plasma TV. Unboxing the speakers - you can tell just by holding one how much thought and care along with the precision manufacturing went into building these speakers. They are extremely well made and weigh more than what you would expect! The attention to detail that went into the package for the speakers alone should say to the average person that they care about the quality of the product! The installation for mounting on the wall was a snap. They took about 15 minutes from opening the box to having them in place on the wall next to the TV. The Right / Left speakers I mounted on the wall and the Center channel I used the standing bracket that came with it and it sits in below / in front of the TV. I was blown away by the sound - it literally sounded like I was there in the concert that was playing on my TV from Palladia. My wife made the comment that she was impressed by the clarity of the speakers and was surprised by the difference in the sound from the old speakers to these. I went from a nice set of Klipsch Quintet SL speakers to these and it is a huge upgrade. I also upgraded my receiver to a new Onkyo 3D and THX capable receiver which I'm sure helped as well. You have to listen to these speakers at your local professional audio store. They are worth the trip and worth the time to listen to them. I also purchased a pair of the XTR-20BP speakers to use as my rear surround speakers - again truly impressed with how they sound compared to my old Klipsch surrounds. I went with a Supercube 2 as well for my sub - I found an amazing deal on NewEgg for one and couldn't pass it up. Someday I'll upgrade to one of the Supercube 8000 subs. I went from a good system that I enjoyed to one that I am extremely proud of and enjoy showing off to friends and family. We use it every day whether it is watching a TV show, football, watching a movie on the PS3 or playing video games like Modern Warfare 3. The system of speakers from Definitive Technology rocks - I hear so much more now than I ever did before with my old system. Thank you Definitive Tech for making such amazing speakers.
